Deryn Cullen studied cello performance at the Universities of Stellenbosch and Cape Town with renowned cellist and teacher, Magdalena Roux. She made her solo debut with orchestra performing Kol Nidrei by Max Bruch at age 15. She was a member and co-leader of the cello section in the South African National Youth Orchestra, and freelanced with many of South Africas professional orchestras while at university.
Deryn moved to London after her studies in 2000. She became a busy freelance cellist, playing with numerous London orchestras and ensembles including the RPO, RPCO and LPO. She also actively sought out non-classical work, and within a few years she was in demand for her improvisational skills with acoustic and rock bands both live and in the studio.
Deryn is now based in Leeds with her husband, Dan Cullen. They work as a musical partnership writing and recording music for film, TV and high end music libraries including Immediate Music and Liquid Cinema. Deryn is a sought after remote session cellist, recording cello parts for award-winning composers throughout the world. |
